Abstract

Agaocephala mineira new species and Agaocephala alvarengai new species (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Dynastinae: Agaocephalini) are described from the southeast and northeast of Minas Gerais State, Brazil, respectively. The new species are compared with similar species, from which they differ mainly in pronotal punctation, body shape, and shape of ocular canthi. After examination of the holotype of Agaocephala urus (Thomson, 1860), this name is synonymized with Agaocephala mannerheimi Laporte, 1832, new synonym. The subgenus Agaocephala (Lycocephala) Martínez & Alvarenga, 1987 is elevated to generic status, Lycocephala Martínez & Alvarenga, 1987, new status, and its diagnostic characters are discussed. A distribution map and identification key to species are given, along with new collection records for other Agaocephala LePeletier & Audinet-Serville species. Notes on Agaocephalini are provided, and three genera previously included in the tribe, Colacus Ohaus, 1910, Democrates Burmeister, 1847, and Gnathogolofa Arrow, 1914, are considered incertae sedis. Two subtribes, Lycomedina new subtribe and Agaocephalina, are described based on morphological and geographical similarities among the genera of the tribe. A lectoype is designated for Agaocephala inermicollis Arrow, 1914. A key to the genera and subtribes of Agaocephalini is provided.
