Abstract

Stemonosudis elegans (Ege, 1933), was originally described from off southwestern Australia and has been widely documented in the Indo-West Pacific Ocean. Four specimens collected from the western Atlantic Ocean off southern Brazil were found in the Zoological Museum in Hamburg, which represent the first record of this species in Atlantic waters. A detailed description of these specimens, compared to the original description, is provided. The species is now recognized as having a circumglobal distribution, although primarily occurring in the Southern Hemisphere.
