Abstract

The planthopper genus Proutista Kirkaldy, 1904 is reviewed. Three new species, Proutista dolabratus Chen & Zhang sp. nov., P. quadratus Chen & Zhang sp. nov., P. striatus Chen & Zhang sp. nov., and a newly-recorded species, P. pseudomoesta Muir, 1915, are reported from China with descriptions and illustrations; two species, P. fenestrata (Bierman, 1910) and P. fritillaris (Boheman, 1838), are transferred to Shizuka as new combinations, S. fenestrata (Bierman, 1910) comb. nov. and S. fritillaris (Boheman, 1838) comb. nov. A checklist and keys to species of Proutista (males and females) from China are provided. Moreover, based on a detailed morphological study of S. fritillaris, the interpretation and terminology of the strongly reduced female genitalia in the group are provided and discussed.
