Diptera shore flies taxonomy ephydrini australasian region

Abstract

The species of Ephydrella from the New Zealand subregion are reviewed, including description of one new species, Ephydrella bicolor (type locality: Chatham Islands, Chatham Island, Wharekuri (field and beach; 43°42.6'S, 176°35.05'W) and designation of a lectotype for Ephydra macquariensis Womersley and for Mydaezealandia glauca (Salmon). The latter name, M. glauca, is synonymized with E. novaezealandiae (Tonnoir and Malloch). Considerable new distributional data are provided and are based primarily on recently identified specimens. To facilitate identification, the tribe Ephydrini is characterized, as are the genus Ephydrella and all species from the New Zealand subregion. A key to the New Zealand species is included, as are numerous photographs of structures of the male terminalia.
