Oribatid mites (Acari, Oribatida) of La Réunion Island

Abstract

This study is based on oribatid mite materials collected from riverine environments in La Réunion Island. We found thirteen species, belonging to 11 genera and eight families. Two new species of the family Galumnidae—Galumna (Galumna) reunionensis sp. nov. and Pergalumna (Pergalumna) aquatica sp. nov.—are described. Galumna (Galumna) reunionensis sp. nov. differs from the congeners (G. (G.) capensis, G. (G.) paracapensis, and G. (G.) szentivanyorum) by the body size, the body integument, the length of the rostral and lamellar setae, the morphology of the bothridial seta, the size and presence/absence of a median pore, the morphology of the notogastral porose areas, and the location of the adanal lyrifissure. Pergalumna (Pergalumna) aquatica sp. nov. differs from the congener (P. (P.) silvatica) by the body size, the shape of the rostrum, the surface of the genital plate, and the presence/absence of the postanal porose area. A list of the known oribatid mites of La Réunion, including 71 species, 47 genera and 26 families, is provided.
