A new species of freshwater crab of the genus Neostrengeria Preztmann, 1965 from Colombia (Malacostraca: Decapoda: Pseudothelphusidae), including an analysis of the geographical distribution of the species of the genus

Abstract

The genus Neostrengeria Pretzmann, 1965, comprises 27 species distributed throughout the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia, ranging from the Serranía of Perijá in the north to the Serrania de la Macarena in the south, at elevations between 300 to 3200m above sea level. We describe a new species of Neostrengeria from the southern region of the Santander Department, increasing the total number of species to 28. This new species is distinguished from its congeners primarily by its third maxilliped, with an exopod that is 0.6 to 0.7 times as long as the ischium, and the distinct morphology of the first male gonopod, particularly the shapes of the gonopod, lateral lobe, and apex. Furthermore, we provide an analysis of the geographical distribution and vertical distribution of species within the genus Neostrengeria.
