Orthoptera crickets grasshoppers katydids Philippine orthopteran Southeast Asia taxonomy

Abstract

The Philippines is a Southeast Asian country, an archipelago with more than 7,000 islands with a complex biogeographical history and is one of the mega-diverse regions in the world. The first checklist of Orthoptera from the Philippines was published in 1915 by Lawrence Bruner, comprising 370 taxa (including 46 taxa now considered as nomen nudum), but there has been no updated checklist since then. Here, we present an updated checklist containing 695 valid species (and subspecies) of orthopterans from 16 families and 48 subfamilies from the Philippines. Among these, 550 species were described from the Philippines; 137 valid taxa have either the generic, subgeneric, species, and/or subspecies names named after the country, places, indigenous people (IPs)/ tribes, person, or languages. From the first species described from the Philippines in 1837, a historical account of the new species discovery of orthopterans in the Philippines is also presented here.
