Taxonomic treatment of the endemic Malagasy praying mantis genus Hyalomantis GIGLIO-TOS, 1915, with a new synonymy and the description of three new species (Mantodea, Iridopterygidae, Tropidomantinae)

Abstract

The praying mantis genus Hyalomantis Giglio-Tos, 1915 (Mantodea, Iridopterygidae, Tropidomantinae) historically included two species, H. madagascariensis Saussure, 1870 and H. punctata Giglio-Tos, 1915. However, we found that H. punctata is a junior synonym through investigation of the original descriptions and specimen comparisons. We have redescribed H. madagascariensis to encompass variability of color patterns that may have led to the description of H. punctata. The taxonomic history for the genus and species is outlined partly to resolve under Article 33.3.1 of the Code (ICZN, 4 th edition) an incorrect subsequent spelling of Miopteryx madagascarensis Saussure, 1870 that is in prevailing use. In addition, we add three new species to the genus described from Madagascar: H. antsingica n. sp., H. murzini n. sp., and H. whitingi n. sp. A key to the four species in English and French is provided for increase accessibility to the people of Madagascar. Illustrations of major features used to diagnose species are provided including the head, pronotum, and male genitalia. Species distribution is presented and locality coordinates are provided in print as well as being available for download as a KML file viewable in Google Earth.
