Abstract

An adult of the rare barracudina Uncisudis advena was collected from the Northwest Shelf off Western Australia. This mature female with ripe eggs is by far the largest known specimen of the genus. Although juveniles possess distinct black blotches on the dorsum and anal fin, adults appear to lose these blotches. Distinguishing features of the genus and species, a detailed description of the adult specimen, as well as a key to species are provided. This specimen is the first record of the genus Uncisudis from Australia.
