Fasciate baridine weevils (Coleoptera, Curculionidae) associated with palms in North and Central America

Abstract

Ten palm-associated species with elytral fascia are assigned to four genera based on morphological characters. Eugeraeus Champion, the only genus with multiple species, serves as a reference for delineating the monospecific genera Assabalius Prena new genus, Cesennia Champion and Killix Prena new genus. Species of Cesennia, Eugeraeus and Killix possess a pair of prosternal spines or humps in both sexes and are considered closely related to each other. This complex includes Cesennia latecincta Champion (Costa Rica, Guatemala, Panamá), Eugeraeus damalos Prena new species (México), Eugeraeus directus Prena new species (Guatemala, Honduras), Eugeraeus discifer Champion (Costa Rica, Panamá), Eugeraeus oerstedi Prena new species (Costa Rica), Eugeraeus portax Prena new species (Panamá), Eugeraeus unifasciatus Champion (México, Guatemala), Eugeraeus vitulus Prena new species (Colombia) and Killix elatus Prena new species (Costa Rica, Panamá). The most northern species, Assabalius flohri Prena new species, from México and extreme southern Texas, has prosternal humps only in males and possesses a number of character states not found in the other nine species. Particular noteworthy is the pronounced abrasion of mandibular structures apparent in both sexes of A. flohri, a character generally considered as stable and widely used in the taxonomy of baridine weevils. For two other species that also develop on palms in the study area, the following nomenclatural changes are proposed. Limnobaris calandriformis Champion, 1908 is transferred to Tonesia Casey, 1922 as Tonesia calandriformis (Champion), new combination. Parisoschoenus expositus (Champion, 1908) is a new junior synonym of Parisoschoenus montanus (Schaufuß, 1866).
