Mecoptera Panorpa taxonomy morphology distribution key

Abstract

The family Panorpidae is composed of approximately 570 species worldwide. The Nearctic region comprises 91 species of Panorpa, of which 34 are distributed in Mexico; however, its richness in Mexico may be underestimated as the group has been poorly studied and collected. Two species are described as new and illustrated: P. bicolumnaris, sp. nov. and P. opposita, sp. nov., both endemic to Veracruz, bringing the total number of Mexican Panorpidae species to 36. Notes on their distribution, their possible relationship to other species and a key species of Panorpa in Veracruz are also presented.
