New planthoppers in the genus Tico from Costa Rica (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha: Derbidae) and an updated molecular phylogeny of the New World Cenchreini

Abstract

Recent survey work in the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica has resulted in the discovery of a series of new species of derbid and cixiid planthoppers associated with palms. Here, new species of Tico Bahder & Bartlett are described and compared to other members of the genus. Sequence data were generated for the new species for the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene, 18S rRNA gene and the D8 to D10 expansion region for the 28S rRNA gene to support the placement of the novel taxa in the genus Tico. Cenchrea exquisita Uhler is transferred to Tico based on morphological features as Tico exquisita (Uhler), comb. nov.
