Dr. Paulo Passos was the 2011 recipient of The Joseph B. Slowinski Award for Excellence in Snake Systematics by the Center of North American Herpetology (CNAH) for the paper entitled "Taxonomic Revision of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest Atractus (Reptilia: Serpentes: Dipsadidae)", published in Zootaxa. Paulo is Adjunct Professor and Curator of the Reptiles Collections at the Museu Nacional from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He has broad research interest in the systematic and evolution of the Neotropical reptiles. However, his current work concentrates on the taxonomy and phylogenetic relationships of Atractus, the more diverse snake genus of the world.
