Prof Hedges has diverse research interests but his systematic work mostly involves amphibians and reptiles. He has described 79 species, 18 genus group taxa, 19 family group taxa, and 30 higher taxa. Coincidentally, the species include the smallest tetrapod (a frog from Cuba), smallest amniote (a lizard from Hispaniola), and smallest snake (from Barbados). He conducts exploratory field work on Caribbean islands and is active in conservation in that region. His 2008 monograph on Neotropical frogs (Terrarana), with Duellman and Heinicke (Zootaxa 1737: 1–182), has become the most cited paper published in Zootaxa during the last two years (2008–2009).
