BOOK REVIEW: GRASSHOPPERS OF CHINA

Acritaxonomy. By ZHEMIN ZHENG. Shaanxi Normal University Press, Xi’an, China. 1993. xi+442 pp. Hardcover. RMB 25.00. Paperback. RMB 20.00. ISBN 7-5613-0982-1/Q12.

The superfamily Acridoidea is one of the most diverse insect groups taxonomically and ecologically. A clear and complete classification is the basis for studies on any other aspects of this group. Because the locust is one of the most harmful pests and the locust plague is one of the most serious disasters in human history, a focal point in plant protection is to take precautions against locusts and bring them under control, the importance of which in agriculture is quite obvious. China is one of the most ecologically diverse and biogeographically significant countries with abundant resources of insects. It follows that any major treatise on Chinese grasshoppers should be of interest to orthopterists and other systematists in China and in the world.
